Coro de San Lorenzo at QC Wildlife

Good evening!

ANG SAYA NG BONDING KANINA NG CORO DE SAN LORENZO SA QC WILDLIFE!

Well folks, I must say that this is one of the most happiest moments of my existence. WHAT A MAJOR MAJOR FUN!

It all started when we planned for our Team Building for our choir group. And through heaven's goodness, it was not a rainy day until we got ourselves home.

Special thanks sa aming mga facilitators because they made our activity possible.

MAJOR MAJOR THANKS TO ALL! VIVA EL CORO DE SAN LORENZO!

BoA - Key of Heart (Korean)

La la la la la la
La la la la la la

Just the key of heart

I believe in love, two hearts
I believe in love, two hearts

Just the key of heart

Just the key of heart

La la la la la la

Linguistic Knowledge

Good morning!

I just arrived from my chorale service. That's it. And I'll be in another church activity by noon time.

To all the readers of this blog, you have probably noticed that this blog of mine is infused with different languages, particularly Austronesian, Indo-European, Altaic, and even Sino-Tibetan. As we all know, these language families have dominated our mundane society, most especially the Indo-European languages. It only proved how Europeans had explored the world. For instance, British settlers took with them the English languages in Canada, Australia, South Africa, India, and others. Spaniards took much control of Latin America, as well as my country, the Philippines. Portuguese conquered and ruled Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Macau, East Timor, and so on. French language dominated in many African nations.

Anyway, let me share to you my knowledge in some languages. And I'm going to cite some notes about those languages.

TAGALOG:
Tagalog is the basis of the Filipino language. It is also the lingua franca of the Filipinos abroad. By the way, Tagalog is my native language. And I speak it in Manila accent, since Metro Manila is my hometown. Moreover, I tried mimicking Bulacan and Batangas accent, but I never perfected those accents, since I never grew up with the people who speak in those dialects. Ayos ba tayo diyan? Wagas!

KAPAMPANGAN/PAMPANGO:
Kapampangan is also my native language, but I speak it in unusual accent. The reason is that I don't have much contacts with Kapampangan speakers. I only learned Kapampangan through my mom. Of all her siblings, she is the only one who speaks more Kapampangan. I must say, Kapampangan language is in slow decline because of the dominance of the Filipino language throughout the Philippines. When I was in Angeles City last two days ago, I heard some children spoke in Tagalog rather than in Kapampangan. And even the language of instruction is Tagalog.

ENGLISH:
It was the Americans who brought English in our country, and not the Britons. And American English is the basis of the English language of the Philippines. And the surprising fact? Many Filipinos cannot fully understand English when spoken in any variety of British or Australian accents. And because English is more used than Spanish, English eventually replaced Spanish as one of the official languages of the Philippines alongside Filipino language. And do you know the reason why many Koreans migrate here? It's so simple. They come here to study English.

SPANISH (ESPAÑOL):
Have you noticed why most of the Filipinos' last names are Spanish? It's so simple. Spain ruled our country for over 3 centuries. And the connection? Spaniards inter-married with native Filipinos. And others had their Christian name in Spanish when they got baptised. But Spanish is not anymore one of the official languages of the Philippines. The Instituto Cervantes is perhaps the only educational institution in the Philippines that uses Spanish in teaching. But at least, I have a fair grasp in that language. And as I immersed myself in Spanish, I then knew that Spanish has several varieties, just like English. But the "Spaniard's Spanish" is my basis for my spoken Spanish.

Nothing can ever be as romantic as French! Whenever I hear it in Parisian accent, it feels like I'm in the romantic city of Paris. But actually, I would like to visit Lourdes, situated in the Pyrenees. And Paris is only the second. So impossible as it may seem, but I would like to gain more knowledge in that romantic language. For what? I'm just fascinated in that language. And I thought, the /r/ sound in French was challenging. But I like making the /r/ sound! Très bien, mon cherie!

GERMAN (DEUTSCH):
It was not anymore challenging for me when I knew that German is very related to English. That is, they are both Germanic languages. I'll give you an example. Der Wasser ist Kalt. If you think the English equivalent is "The water is cold.", then you're correct! And here's another one. Wer ist mein Vater? Wo ist mein Bruder? What do you think? If you think "Where is my father? Who is my brother?" is the answer, then you are WRONG! HAHAHAHAHA! Actually, "wo" is "where", whereas "wer" is "who". And before, I got a mistake about that, hihihi! Ich will eine Reise nach Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, und Belgien zu machen. Und will ich die Deutschesprache zu lernen!

JAPANESE (日本語):
J-Pop had made success in the Philippines. The song "Sweet Soul Revue" by Pizzicato Five was a big smash in many Philippine charts. And until now, it's still one of my favourite songs. And for me, Japanese is not a difficult language. The problem is, I don't have much exposure in Japanese media. But I do believe, Japanese is not complicated to be learned. And guess what? I love Super Sentai more than Power Rangers! And through Tokusatsu series, I get a chance to acquire some knowledge in Japanese.

The so-called "Korean Wave" has made its way in the Philippine Islands. And the Philippine audience gave high praises for many Korean artists, such as BoA, Se7en, Rain, Super Junior, Girls' Generation, 2NE1, Big Bang, Wonder Girls, and many other more. Hopefully, OPM will also be known in Korea. Anyway, Charice Pempengco, Christian Bautista, and Lea Salonga are some of the Philippine artists who made successful crossovers in different countries. Well, what some people don't know is that Korean language exists in different dialects. For instance, the Seoul dialect is spoken in Seoul Metropolitan Area and Gyeonggi-do, and is the basis for the Korean language in South Korea. The Pyeong'an dialect is spoken in Pyongyang, Pyeong'anbuk-do, Pyeong'annam-do, and Chagang-do, and is the basis of the Korean language in North Korea. Other dialects include Chungcheong, Jeolla, Gangwon, Gyeongsang, Jeju, Hwanghae, and Hamgyeong.

ITALIAN (ITALIANO)
It's not suprising why the Italian language is the closest resemblance of the Latin language. Just like all Romance languages, Italian directly descended from Latin. And Latin was once spoken in the Italian peninsula. Hence, Italian had retained most of the characteristics of Latin. Just like French, Italian language sounds very romantic! And I noticed before, I was able to understand some Italian (that is, the written Italian and not the spoken one) because of its numerous cognates with Spanish. And I started to study Spanish when I was in late elementary. But I already knew before that Spanish and Italian are very related to each other, but I didn't had yet an idea that they are both direct descendants of Latin. How about some plate of spaghetti or lasagna? Perfettamente!

PORTUGUESE (PORTUGUÊS)
Portuguese is one of the world's major languages. And Brazil is the largest Portuguese-speaking country. However, different Portuguese dialects arose as its speakers from different countries became diverse from each other. Brazilian Portuguese is now a bit different from Iberian Portuguese (from Iberian peninsula where Portugal is). Speaking of the Portuguese language itself, its written form resembles Spanish, but its spoken form may sound more like French. Anyway, that's the spirit of the Portuguese language. Obrigado!

Other languages:
LUXEMBOURGISH (LËTZEBUERGESCH)
CATALAN (CATALÀ)
INDONESIAN (BAHASA INDONESIA)
MALAYSIAN (BAHASA MELAYU)
CEBUANO (SUGBUANON)
HILIGAYNON
ILOCANO

Se7en - Money Can't Buy Me Love

You never knew a Rider until I got you Prada,
And showed you all the finer things
I took you out that Hooptie, went from Guess to Gucci
you even got a diamond ring (I gave you everything)

But You still left me in cold
and I couldn’t figure out the reason why
House with the white fence, clothes with the right print
What else could I possibly do?
(Girl, I gotta know)

How could you leave everything behind
after all I’ve given to you
(How could you just be through?)
I didn’t get it, lots of female would be with it,
But I noticed that you’re different
Money can’t buy you love

I don’t know what I was thinking of
(girl, I don’t know what I was thinking)
How did I think I could buy your love
Now I know money can’t buy me love
Now I’m wishing you’d come back to me
I couldn’t believe how you left it all

Money can’t buy me
Money can’t buy me
Money can’t buy me love

Girl I don’t really know why
I thought I could show you that
in the end the money could win
(But the money never could win)
But Now I understand I should’ve got to know you
without the help of Benjamin

Can I get u to (understand)
I’m not really that type of man
Definitely have a new plan.
Come back, again.
Just knew I had u for keeps I didn’t know u would leave
Girl I gotta know (Girl I gotta know)

How could you leave everything behind
after all I’ve given to you
(How could you just be through?)
I didn’t get it, lots of female would be with it,
But I noticed that you’re different

Money can’t buy you love

I don’t know what I was thinking of
(girl, I don’t know what I was thinking)
How did I think I could buy your love
Now I know money can’t buy me love
Now I’m wishing you’d come back to me
I couldn’t believe how you left it all

Money can’t buy me
Money can’t buy me
Money can’t buy me love

Money can’t buy me love
How did I allow myself to be so into you,
that I can’t let you go
Money can’t buy me love
I’m so used to being the player type,
this is serious that I should let you know.
Money can’t buy me love
You need to realize how much you mean,
cause I never let my feeling show,
Money can’t buy me love
No---- Money can’t buy me love

I don’t know what I was thinking of
(girl, I don’t know what I was thinking)
How did I think I could buy your love
Now I know money can’t buy me love
Now I’m wishing you’d come back to me
I couldn’t believe how you left it all

Money can’t buy me
Money can’t buy me

Good morning.

It wasn't that a good day for me. For more than 7 weeks that I have been an English teacher to Korean students, I still need to make a lot of adjustments for my teaching career.

Patience.

It's really important to observe patience especially to those Koreans who have very limited knowledge in English. As with some Filipinos, Koreans find English as a challenging language. In the first place, English is not the official language of Korea (north and south), and Koreans do not usually speak English. Plus, they are less exposed to English media, that is why it's really challenging for them to speak it, despite the fact that English is being taught in schools throughout Korea.

I guess, you know now what I am pointing about. I must confess, I lack PATIENCE. And I need MORE PATIENCE.

Now let me share you a story about my teaching experience to a little boy. This boy is only 10 years old. I could still remember that I was already a good conversant in English when I was only 10. Perhaps, I was virtually exposed to English media and I was able to speak it, the mere fact that I speak Tagalog and Kapampangan at home. Back again to my story, this little boy is fond of playing Maple Story.

This little boy is somehow a good follower. He is not hesitant of following the words that I instruct him to follow. Nevertheless, he still needs effort to develop his vocabulary, comprehension, and grammar. He is only familiar with the simple greetings, such as "Good morning!" and "How are you?". Aside from those, it is hard for him to comprehend some instructions and statements.

Awhile ago, I was conducting a test for him. I already provided simple instructions and concrete examples for many times, but he didn't get it. Plus, he keeps on saying the words that I was saying, as if I was instructing him to repeat after me. Moreover, he was saying some inappropriate things in Korean that really pissed me off. I was about to show my anger to my student but I don't want to ruin the policy of professionalism as an English teacher. In the first place, that little boy is still young, and it's hard for him to adjust in English.

As what I have learned from this moment, here are some important notes that I would like to share:

Level 1 – BEGINNER

LISTENING and COMPREHENSION SKILLS
1. The student required the questions to be repeated more than twice before they could understand.
2. The teacher had to adjust her speech or speak very slowly and clearly.
3. Korean translations were given to help the student’s comprehension.
4. The teacher had to listen carefully because the student was whispering, resorting to speaking the native language, OR became completely silent.
5. The student needed a lot of keywords and key situations to understand a question.
6. Spoon-feeding of answers was required.
7. The class was teacher-directed.

VOCABULARY and EXPRESSIONS
1. The student had an almost non-existent vocabulary.
2. The student was not able to understand and his responses lacked expression.
3. The teacher had to provide almost every definition of words and phrases.
4. Words and phrases were always taken out of context or misconstrued by the student.
5. The student was able to recognize basic and simple vocabulary words that are most commonly heard.

GRAMMAR and SENTENCE CONSTRUCTION SKILLS
1. The student lacked the ability to construct meaningful sentences.
2. Grammar was erratic at times, and sometimes incomprehensible.
3. The student responded with individual words or silence.
4. Communication was hampered due to inability to compose sentences.
5. The teacher had to aid the student at all times.

PRONUNCIATION SKILLS
1. The native tongue completely influenced pronunciation and intonation, which made English words difficult to comprehend.
2. The student had great difficulty in pronouncing words with the letter L, R, W, P, and F.
3. The teacher had to guide the student several times before correct pronunciation was attained.
4. Tail tones were very evident “ee” and “uh”.

FLUENCY
1. The student entered into significant pauses that disrupted communication.
2. There was a lot of dead air and insufficient responses from the student.
3. The student had very limited communication skills.
4. The student had the propensity to use the native language and sound like gibberish.
5. The teacher spoon-fed the student with answers.

I should keep all of these in my mind. And I pray that my little student will be able to learn English as soon as possible. Good luck to me!

BoA - Fallin'

I can make it smile for you

fallin' fallin' fallin' in love
fallin' fallin' fallin' in love
fallin' fallin' fallin' in love
fallin' fallin' fallin' in love
fallin' fallin' in love

fallin' fallin' fallin' in love...

このstyleで let's Go!

(I think I'm in love)
fallin' fallin' fallin' in love
fallin' fallin' fallin' in love
fallin' fallin' fallin' in love
fallin' fallin' fallin' in love
fallin' fallin' in love

fallin' fallin' fallin' in love...

I see a beautiful rainbow that makes me feel positive
It's like... I can be anything everything I want
Yes Imma be
So I gotta sing this song for me

fallin' fallin' fallin' in love
fallin' fallin' fallin' in love
fallin' fallin' fallin' in love
